Britain Has 1,000 Days to Prepare for War, Defense Chief Warns

(MENAFN) Britain has a little over 1,000 days to get ready to fight and win a war, Defense Secretary Wes Streeting cautioned on Saturday, as hostile states build up their military strength.

In an article for a British broadsheet, Streeting said the country’s adversaries could be in a position to strike by 2030. That leaves the UK and its NATO allies just over three years to prepare.

“Our adversaries’ willingness to harm us is not new. What has changed is their capacity. By 2030, their force strength and war economy could put them in a position to attack. That gives us a little over 1,000 days to complete our mission: to be ready with our allies to fight and win,” he wrote.

“To prevent the worst, we have to prepare for it. My defining priority is to make sure that this country is ready to fight and win a war,” he added.

Threats at home and abroad

Streeting also pointed to mounting dangers from hostile states, cyberattacks, organized crime and climate change, including threats to critical infrastructure. In an interview with a national broadcaster, he said Britain confronts a higher level of threat “than we have certainly for most, if not all, of my lifetime.”

His remarks coincide with the launch of the government’s “Be Ready” campaign. It urges households to keep three days’ worth of essential supplies on hand in case of a national emergency.

Official guidance recommends storing bottled water, nonperishable food, cash and other basics at home. The government said the scheme is meant to build national resilience and does not respond to any specific intelligence warning.

Streeting argued that phrases such as “hybrid warfare” and “grey zone threats” fail to capture the danger posed by hostile states.

“It’s really important that we ask households and businesses, are they prepared? Are they ready? Do they know how they would respond in the event of everyday challenges that might manifest themselves?” he said, according to a British tabloid.

“In the face of those threats, which are not hypothetical but real, and not somewhere else but increasingly here, we have to step up and take seriously our national resilience as well as our national defense,” he added.

Cyber incident cited
Officials offered a recent PHP software security incident as further proof of the need to be prepared. Vulnerabilities disclosed Wednesday sent governments and businesses worldwide scrambling to shore up their systems, drew millions of hacking attempts and knocked some services offline.

Streeting warned that such incidents could grow more common as artificial intelligence makes it easier for attackers to slip past conventional defenses.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham also pressed for a more proactive stance on emergencies. At a meeting on the response to wildfires, he said Britain had been “on the back foot” in the past, and he unveiled a new wildfire response plan that includes the deployment of military aircraft.

“It’s not about panicking. It’s about just taking sensible measures to have enough in the house to tide you over should there be a difficult situation,” Burnham told a national broadcaster.

The British advice mirrors guidance the European Commission issued in March 2025, which urged EU citizens to keep 72-hour emergency kits stocked with essentials such as food, water, cash and power banks.
