Lavrov Calls on Europe to Adopt Trump’s Stance on Russia

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday called on European leaders to adopt the stance toward Moscow once taken by U.S. President Donald Trump, as tensions between Russia and the West continue to mount.

During a press briefing in Moscow following talks with Mozambique’s Foreign Minister Maria Lucas, Lavrov criticized recent remarks by European officials, labeling them “very alarming” and accusing them of inflaming hostilities with Russia.

"The reasons behind such a strategy are impunity and the constant incitement of the Kyiv regime to continue provocations and terrorist acts against civilian infrastructure and peaceful citizens of the Russian Federation. These actions do not stop," he said.

Lavrov promised that Russia would issue “a fitting response” and accomplish its objectives, despite what he described as the European Union’s attempts to obstruct those aims “through the hands of Kyiv.”

"I hope the reasonable approach, including a willingness for dialogue, to listen and understand, demonstrated by the Trump administration after replacing the Biden administration, which had been in lockstep with reckless Europeans, will not go unnoticed in Europe," he added.

Tensions escalated further last week when German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius declared that German forces would be prepared “to kill Russian soldiers” in the event of a Russian assault on NATO.

Separately, US Army Europe and Africa Commander Christopher Donahue raised the possibility of a preemptive military strike on Kaliningrad, Russia’s strategic exclave on the Baltic Sea.

Foreign Minister Lucas, speaking on behalf of Mozambique, voiced optimism about the upcoming round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, which are expected to be held in Istanbul in the coming days.

Mozambique, she said, “sees Russia as a highly resilient country that has withstood all sanctions and obstacles and is seeking to resolve the Ukrainian conflict through negotiations.”

She added that the war in Ukraine is impacting nations across the globe, including in Africa, where food security and supply chains from Russia have been disrupted.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Tuesday that the talks are scheduled for Wednesday, while the Kremlin stated that Moscow remains hopeful the negotiations will go forward this week.
